The South Carolina Economic Development Institute–The Institute – is South Carolina’s leading economic development education program for the non-economic development professional. A thirty-two-year partnership between the South Carolina Economic Developers Association and the South Carolina Department of Commerce, The Institute has awarded Certificates of Completion to 1,430 participants since its inception.
The Institute serves to educate those who support and participate in economic development activities in their communities while providing unique and innovative development approaches for implementation in local communities. Attendees who successfully complete each of the 2024 Institute’s four sessions will earn a Certificate of Completion.*
 
2024 Institute Sessions
The Institute is comprised of four two-day sessions held in various locations around the state to provide a more “hands-on” educational experience.
*Special note: Attendees expecting to earn an Institute certificate are required to attend all sessions in consecutive order beginning with Session I.
The 2024 Institute will be limited to 65 participants.

 

SESSION I – LEADERSHIP AND COMMUNICATION SKILLS

Date: February 8 - 9,  Sumter, SC

Session I will provide participants with the tools to build personal leadership skills as well as methods to assess their community leadership. Attendees will gain personal communication skills and techniques necessary for interaction with the press and the public.

 

SESSION II – COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT

Date: May 2 - 3, North Augusta

Participants in Session II will not only learn the importance of community development, but will also see first-hand how city officials and business leaders continue to create an evolving economy.

 

SESSION III – BUSINESS AND INDUSTRIAL DEVELOPMENT

Date: August 22 - 23, Greer

Session III will offer participants the basic elements necessary for making decisions when recruiting business and industry.    

 

SESSION IV – PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT

Date: November 7- 8, Beaufort

The final Institute session will focus on the basics communities must provide to be competitive in the business and industry recruitment game. Attendees will gain insight into such subject matter as: water and wastewater infrastructure, available buildings as well as the importance of having ready and available sites and other necessary development components.

 

Institute Fee–$450/session

Includes all necessary classroom materials, cost of instructors, breakfast and lunch. Local accommodations will be made available to attendees after registering for all or any sessions at an attractive rate.
